Chedburgh Marquis Community Hub will receive a package of specialist business advice and a £2,500 bursary from More Than A Pub, a unique two year programme established to help support community ownership of pubs in England. Its value is £3.62 million and is jointly funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and Power to Change. It is being delivered by Plunkett Foundation in collaboration with Co-operative & Community Finance, Key Fund, the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), Co-operative Mutual Solutions, Pub is the Hub and Locality.

“We’re delighted to have been awarded support from More Than A Pub,” said Richard Plowman – Chairman of the group. “This bursary will help pay for things like the building condition survey, the preparation of a business plan, marketing and fundraising events.  This is one step closer to the group buying the pub and we as a group are very excited for our future plans.”

Chedburgh Marquis Community Hub was formed in January 2018, shortly after the Parish Council had advised that the pub, as an Asset of Community Value, was being offered for sale on the open market.  The pub has been closed since October 2017 and Chedburgh Marquis Community Hub would like to turn The Marquis Cornwallis into a successful community pub alongside a community café and shop.

Plunkett Foundation’s Executive Director James Alcock said: “We’re so pleased to be able to support Chedburgh Marquis Community Hub who are working hard to make sure their community can benefit from everything that having a thriving local pub brings. Pubs that are owned and run by the community are so much more than a place to buy a drink; they provide important social spaces and services for local people, and are central to their community’s sense of place and identity.”

Chedburgh Marquis Community Hub is holding a public meeting on Friday 8th June from 6.30pm at the Erskine Centre, Chedburgh to update on the progress of the project.  There will be Tink’s Tipsy Tavern and Hartest Brewery for alcoholic drinks and soft drinks and also ‘The Mobile Pizza Co’ for homemade wood fired pizzas.  All are welcome to attend.  For more information on the event visit www.facebook.com/SavetheMarquis
