The long established and well loved ‘wholefood’ Cafe in Llandrindod Wells, The Herb Garden, is on the point of a brand new and ground breaking future as a ‘Community Cafe’.

Owner Sally Bramhall has been wanting to retire for some time, but due to the economic downturn, has failed to find a buyer. Because of Sally’s ethics the Cafe already supports and hosts groups and organisations like the local Credit Union; the Transition Town; Llandrindod Soup and is a venue for charities raising funds through ‘Curry and Quiz’ nights.

Staff and customers rallied last year deciding to take the Cafe over themselves and run it as a Community Cafe. Support from the Plunkett Foundation enabled them to decide on structures and enable procedures.

The Herb Garden Community Cafe will be a ‘Community Benefit Society’, (CBS),and will be run according to accepted CBS rules and is also registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.

In short this means that after all overheads are covered the Cafe can help support other initiatives in the town both financially and as a venue. It also welcomes volunteer input, which will be key to its success, offering support and training in exchange.

Dorienne Robinson, chair of the management committee, said: “ We need to raise £50,000  to enable the takeover and to give a three month trading reserve. To do this we are issuing shares at £1 each with a minimum purchase of £20. All shareholders will be invited to leave their ‘handprint’ and signature on our ‘helping hands’ counter front. Major shareholders will be entitled to benefits ranging from having their name on a chair, a table and a professional photograph on our supporters' wall."

Sarah Palmer, head chef, said: "Our Cafe is special in Llandrindod. We cater for a wide range of dietary requirements including, Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Coeliac. Our aim is the provision of good nutritional, freshly cooked food using local produce where possible. The same is available for outside catering, events, weddings, and business lunches. We feel Llandrindod would lose something important if we fail.”
