Join us when we'll be in the Denbighshire village of Pwllglas. This event is for anyone worried about the future of their village shop, pub or other local amenity - to come and see how community ownership can be used not just to save it, but transform it into a vibrant local hub.

Celebrating its third year in business this year, Pwllglas Community Shop reopened after a gap of 20 years when locals took action into their own hands. They have since been awarded the coveted ‘Welsh Village Shop of the Year’ Countryside Alliance Award – often referred to as the ‘Rural Oscars’! – and now employ five local people and 20 volunteers. Their success lies in part due to the fact that they offer a range of other services to locals, including takeaway meals, bulk buying schemes and somewhere to sit in and have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee.

This event will be your chance to hear directly from those who set up Pwllglas Community Shop about how they did it, as well as their plans for the future, with tours of the building and inspiring talks. Advisers from Plunkett Foundation will also be on-hand to talk through the practicalities of setting up and running a community co-operative in your area.

You can take part in activities held by the North Wales Wildlife Trust in support of the nearby Coed Cilygroeslwyd reserve. Have fun building bird houses for the reserve to help with their conservation project.

Even if community ownership is a completely new idea to you, we’d love to have you with us on the day to show you what a difference it can make, and hopefully inspire you to see what it could do for your community!
