Shop open for business

Stawley''s new shop and post office has opened up its doors for the first time.

The new shop at the former pottery store next to Stawley School is not due to be officially opened until February 18 but James and Sherie Corry decided to invite customers in a little early.

The shop has replaced Greenham Post Office, which was run from a room in Mr and Mrs Wotton''s home.

Our shop is open!

Stawley Village Shop was given a huge welcome to the area by members of the community as they turned up for its official opening on Saturday.

The new shop has taken over from Greenham Post Office and children from the village helped to cut the ribbon and declare it officially open at 2pm.

Crowds enjoyed some bubbly to mark the occasion and browsed the newly stocked shelves in the former school kitchen.

James Corry, who owns the store with his wife, said: "It was very busy. We were inundated with people, but it was very nice, people were very complimentary. We''re looking forward to getting into it now, but we know it will be hard work as well."

Redundant Building to Open as Post Office

A former school kitchen in Somerset is to get a new lease of life when it officially opens as a convenience store and Post Office for the village community this weekend. The restoration and building work has been made possible by a Rural Enterprise Scheme (RES) grant.

The Victorian building, which was once part of Stawley School in Appley Cross, went into decline after school meals were no longer prepared on the premises. The building was later used as a pottery business but became redundant more than a decade ago.

Stawley Community Association saw potential for its future use back in Spring 2004 and went about raising interest to convert it into a store and Post Office. The plans include a computer room with broadband facilities that people from the village and surrounding areas will be able to use. There will also be a community room where organisations such as The Citizens Advice Bureau and the community police force can hold surgeries.

Stawley development worker, Keeley Rudd, explained:

"The new facility will become a hub in the community and will also mean that village groups can fix up meetings nearby rather than have to travel into Wellington.

"This will not only provide people with a convenience store, but there will also be office equipment such as a photocopier, laminator and a computer."

Steve Marston, Regional Co-ordinator for the Project Based Schemes with the Rural Development Service in the South West, said:

"This is a good example of how a redundant building can be restored and put back into use for the benefit of the local community. In RDS we were particularly impressed with the strong level of community support which the applicants demonstrated for the project."
