Plunkett Franchise Models

The Plunkett Franchise Models Project has identified the agricultural marketing co-operatives of the future and built replicable models of them. By making these models available to everyone, we want the farming community and everyone living in rural areas to identify these new business opportunities quickly, and to know how to set up marketing co-operatives to exploit these opportunities effectively.

Each franchise model explains the best way (based on current research) to establish a successful co-operative producer marketing group in a specific market sector. The franchise model contains information on how to set up the enterprise with an appropriate legal structure, as well as an overview of the market in which the new business will operate, together with a detailed financial model. The project also identified the five Key Success Factors that all successful co-operatives have in common.

We have called these models “franchises” because originally the term simply meant a right or a licence granted to a business to exploit a market opportunity. In the 20th century the expression came to mean an off-the-shelf business model that could be bought at an agreed fee. Our use of the term combines the two ideas – these franchise models contain all the guidance and information needed to set up a successful co-operative business in specified market sectors, but they are available free of charge to the user.
