Villagers Build Their Own Power Station

Residents of a Lake District valley hope to build their own £1.25M hydroelectricity scheme to raise money for the community. The scheme in Kentmore, near Kendal, will earn an annual profit of up to £100,000 by feeding the National Grid - and the case will go to charitable causes in the village. Residents also hope their project, large enough to provide power for 300 average homes, will inspire a new generation of eco-friendly schemes around Britain. The project, which involves the construction of a weir across the River Kent, is still awaiting planning approval. However, if it gets the go ahead, it is likely to be running by the end of 2012. The community-owned scheme came out of a parish meeting two years ago and is run by a charitable trust.
