THE VERY PICTURE OF A COMMUNITY-OWNED SHOP
Burton-in-Lonsdale Village Shop is a bit different from your average local store. For one thing, its window isn’t real, it’s a painting! When this flourishing, community-owned shop was faced by a problem of what to do with a blanked-off window that dominated the frontage, the shopkeepers turned to the community for ideas. Local artist Marion Hodgson came up with a solution, to transform the uninspiring space into a unique display of what the shop sells. Marion said: “I wanted to show what the shop sells so I brought a few goods home and painted them!” Burton-in-Lonsdale is one of around 200 small rural communities in the UK which, rather than lose their only shop, took matters into their own hands and bought it four years ago.
