American co-operatives challenge consumers to eat local
The National Co-operative Association in America is challenging its consumers and locals to be "locovores" - to eat locally sourced produce as an ongoing staple to their diets. The organisation is recommending that four out of every five meals should be made of food produced close to home. Robynn Shrader, CEO for the organisation, recommends eating locally produced food for social and economic reasons. The money paid for items will stay in the area, and the programme's resulting community cohesion will help farmers. Because the food doesn't travel far, it also tastes better and is more sympathetic to the environment. The association, founded in 1999, said it has cultivated reciprocal relationships with local growers and producers over the years. The association is owned by 111 food co-ops operating more than 140 stores in thirty-two states.
